He subsequently studied a degree in Mechatronics at the University of Leeds, winning the Farnell Award for his ‘24 degrees of freedom’ hand.

Following a Masters in Engineering Adam is studying for a PhD in Bioengineering at the University of Brunswick, Canada, working on upper limb prosthetic research. He is the lead mechanical engineer involved in a multi-million dollar advanced hand prosthesis research project.

Crispin’s Rolls Royce Apprenticeship
Young apprentice Engineering student, Crispin Cousins (aged 15) is a Year 11 student at Fulford School. He attends York College one day per week on the Young Apprenticeship Scheme and he has been accepted onto the renowned Rolls Royce Apprentice Scheme. Out of 3,000 applicants Crispin was offered one of approximately 60 apprenticeships by the prestigious company.

Crispin went through a rigorous selection process with Rolls Royce; after completing an application form he was invited to an interview day in Derby. The day consisted of three interviews and a Maths and English test. Prior to the day, Crispin was asked to learn how jet engines work and he sat a test. He also answered questions on why he wanted to work for Rolls Royce and his outside interests.

Crispin said: “As a hobby I was interested in engineering, building model steam engines from about the age of 12. I also remember talking to my granddad and uncle who were engineers. On choosing my GCSEs I took up the option of studying the Young Apprenticeship Engineering programme at York College and this put me on track to think about a future in engineering. Attending College one day a week, studying at school for the remaining four, gave me a good break from school and I learnt so much from my tutors.
Also, I have made friends on my course who are interested in the same things as me. From September I will be living in Derby during the week, returning home at weekends … I am very excited to be offered this fantastic opportunity as I understand there will be plenty of opportunity to progress within the company as I learn more and more.”

Crispin has been encouraged and supported by his teachers at Fulford School and York College. His fantastic achievement is on a par with a student obtaining a place at Oxford or Cambridge. It is really encouraging to see a student achieve so highly following a vocational route.

Amy enjoys her practical Science course
Amy Shaw-Davies is a former student at Manor C of E School who is currently in the final year of a National Diploma in Applied Science at York College. Having enjoyed Science at school Amy wanted to progress to a practical, hands-on Level 3 Science course which would give her confidence to focus on her future career aspirations.

She says: “Studying Applied Science at York College is really good. It’s a practical course and I carry out my own research to find the answers. I’m not spoon fed information, I’m able to get on with things my way. I come in to College four days a week, this means that I spend my free time working on assignments. It works very well as long as I keep on top of the workload. College life is great, I like the fact that I get up in the morning and ride to College on my moped or else take the bus. I feel independent and able to make my own decisions about what I do every day, always mindful that I have coursework on the go.”

I’ve made loads of friends at College, some I knew from my secondary school and others I have met through my course. It’s easy to get to know people here. I want to study Bio-veterinary Science at university, which is an exciting prospect. I’m so pleased that I decided to come to College after taking my GCSEs, it’s been the right choice for me.”
