Many liquid crystals, like those pictured here, were developed by scientists based in Yorkshire; they have the potential to be used in applications such as high definition TV screens.

The development of liquid crystal technologies has had a huge impact on science and engineering. Researchers at the University of York are exploring ways to exploit these unique materials for use in large area electronic displays, like LCD screens, e-readers, high definition TV and stereoscopic 3D imagery.
