Did you know?

John Snow, born in North Street, York in 1813, pioneer in anaesthesia and ‘father of epidemiology’, was recently voted ‘greatest doctor ever’.

Snow traced the source of the cholera outbreak in Soho, London, to the public water pump on Broad Street. His studies of the pattern of the disease persuaded the local council to disable the well pump by removing its handle. This action has been commonly credited as ending the outbreak.
